Upper Body Conditions: Head, Neck, Shoulders and Arms
Postural Neck Pain – Many people who work in a stationery position suffer from the effects of headaches and postural pain. Core strengthening and activity education can assist in the treatment of these potentially debilitating conditions.
Bursitis – A bursa is a fluid-filled sac which protects nerves and other soft tissue structures in the body. Bursitis is a swelling of an agitated bursa in response to stress and can be effectively treated with strapping, massage and activity change.
Rotator Cuff Tension / Tightness – Soft tissue massage and western acupuncture can assist with tight tendons and muscles and education is provided for future self-management.
Overuse Injuries – Conditions such as Tennis Elbow, Golfer’s Elbow, Repetitive Strain Injury and Carpel Tunnel Syndrome can limit your ability to work and enjoy recreational activities. Treatment for these conditions includes modification of activity, postural analysis and strengthening and massage.
Rheumatic and Inflammatory Arthritic Conditions – Autoimmune and arthritic conditions such as Rheumatoid Arthritis and Osteoarthritis affect your quality of life. Treatments for these types of conditions include maintaining muscle strength and flexibility and providing advice on appropriate exercise activity and footwear.
Diabetes Mellitus – This is a condition affecting all body systems and is caused by a lack of effective insulin. Treatment includes encouraging a patient-specific activity regime and monitoring of associated conditions such as decrease in touch sensation.
Mid Body Conditions: Torso and Hips
Spine Pain – Causes can include Schuermans Disease, Facet Joint Pain and Disc Pain and treatment is specifically aligned to the patient and their lifestyle requirements. Treatment such as massage and activity advice is incorporated into postural analysis, core strengthening and education.
Nerve Impingement – This can cause activity-limiting pain and associated muscle weakening. Releasing of tissues through massage and western acupuncture will greatly assist these issues.
Glutues Medius / Piriformus Tendinopathy – Tendinopathy can be caused by either inflammation of, or small tears in, various tendons which cause significant pain. RICE and massage greatly assist in dealing with acute and long term tendinopathy conditions.
Groin Strain – This is an easily healed condition which benefits from RICE and activity modification. The PoditryMed physiotherapists will also teach you the correct stretching techniques for future-proofing against the return of this condition.
Lower Body Conditions: Lower Limb
Patellofemoral Joint Pain – Pain in this region is generally caused by poor alignment of the knee cap. Muscle flexibility and balancing assists this issue and can be maintained with activity education and footwear advice.
Meniscus Injury – The menisci lie within the knee joint and cushion the joint from stress associated with running and jumping. Treating an injured meniscus takes a multidisciplinary approach which is why PodiatryMed’s podiatrists and physiotherapists are the health professionals for you.
Cruciate Ligament Injury – The cruciate ligaments of your knee keep that joint stable and are readily injured in many sporting activities, especially contact sports. Strengthening of the joint is of upmost importance after injury and massage and footwear can assist this process.
Iliotibial Band Injury / Runner’s Knee – The iliotibial band runs from the hip to knee on the outside of the leg and becomes tightened in runners who do not stretch appropriately or are unstable. PodiatryMed provides muscle balancing and a systematic approach to warm ups and warm downs to integrate to your running routine.
Osgood Schlatters – This is a common cause of knee pain in teenagers. In this condition inflammation occurs at the top of the shin bone where the knee cap tendon inserts – causing pain. Treatment includes RICE and activity modification and education.
Shin Splints – Also known as Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome, this condition is common in runners and the pain is caused by inflammation of the lower limb tendons. Treatment can be in phases with rehabilitative education a priority.
Calf Pain – Pain in the calf can have many causes from systemic illness to local trauma. Many associated treatment options such as rest, stretching, western acupuncture and activity modification and education can assist in recovery.
Sprains – Sprains can happen at any time to any person and recovery depends on the quality of rehabilitative care. Stabilising the area with strapping and appropriate footwear are but two of the possible treatment options for lower limb sprains.
Severs – This is potentially the most common heel pain cause in pre-teens. The Achilles tendon fibres pull away from their attachment into the back of the heel causing pain when standing, walking and in activity. Footwear and in-shoe modifications assist this condition.
Heel Pain – This has many causes such as footwear, activity and trauma, and many differing treatment options such as rest, stretching, strapping, orthotics and massage.
Plantar Fasciitis – The plantar fascia covers the sole of the foot and is vital to effective propulsion in walking. This frequently injured structure responds well to strapping and activity adjustment however it can be stubborn if not well managed.
Neuroma – The pressure and rubbing forces directed at the nerves of the foot cause burning and radiating pain that can be treated by a simply modified orthotic device and footwear education.
Bursitis – A bursa is a fluid-filled sac which protects nerves and other soft tissue structures in the body. Bursitis is a swelling of an agitated bursa in response to stress and can be effectively treated with strapping and footwear change.
Bunion – The progressive misalignment of toes in relation to the rest of the foot can cause pain and cosmetic embarrassment and be related to systemic conditions such as Rheumatoid Arthritis or hereditary factors. The PodiatryMed team can advise on patient-specific treatment options and refer as necessary to other health professionals such as surgeons.
Toe Issues – Joint subluxation and dislocation and muscle instability can lead to toe pain and deformity. Treatments include footwear and activity advice and stretching and strengthening exercises.
Nail and Skin Problems – Conditions such as ingrown toe nails, corns, callous and verrucae have multiple treatment options that are provided by podiatrists. Treatments include nail cutting, fungal nail laser treatment, ingrown nail surgery, callous debriding and verrucae treatment as well as advice on footwear and foot care techniques.
